Recent changes in charity legislation have required some churches to register with the Charity Commission and has made us all aware of the fact that Elders are the “charity trustees” of the assets of local churches. Some useful resources are available to advise Elders of this aspect of their work and we commend them to you.
First, the Mersey Synod has produced a leaflet “Charity Trusteeship – An introduction for Ministers and Elders”, together with a shorter summary document. They have kindly agreed that we might put these on our website and we do so now (though it should be noted that queries should be referred to our own Synod Trust Office at East Croydon, not to Mersey Synod’s Trust Officer!)
Also of interest is the fact that the URC has now produced “A model constitution for local churches”. This may be found in the Assembly 2010 Book of Reports (Mission Council Annexe 5 pp 68-
